Core and edge PoPs on the KiNET backbone
KiNET runs seven core PoPs and three edge PoPs. This article explains how they differ in role, capacity and services.
The KiNET backbone has ten PoPs. Seven are core PoPs and three are edge PoPs. They differ in role and capacity, and in the services each one sells.
What does a core PoP do?
A core PoP carries the backbone. The core PoPs are Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Seattle. Tokyo and Hong Kong have 100G, Shenzhen 30G, and the others 20G.
What does an edge PoP do?
An edge PoP extends the backbone into a market. Taipei connects to STUIX and TPIX and also reaches HKIX and Equinix IX Hong Kong. Singapore connects to SGIX and Equinix IX Singapore. Suzhou, connected to Shanghai, takes transit from China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile and CERNET. Taipei and Singapore have 20G; Suzhou has 10G.
Why are Hong Kong and Shanghai hubs?
Hong Kong is a core PoP where the edge segment between Singapore and Taipei joins the backbone. Shanghai is a core PoP where the segment to Suzhou starts. The network map draws both as hubs: a core ring with the edge colour around it.

Which kind should I choose?
Choose Tokyo or Hong Kong for the largest capacity and DDoS scrubbing. Choose Shenzhen, Shanghai or Suzhou to reach users on the mainland Chinese carriers and CERNET. Choose Taipei or Singapore when your users sit on networks that peer at their exchanges.
